Ben Frain
"Ben is a creative and talented writer who I have worked with over a number of years. I have commissioned him on a number of occasions and have always been extremely satisfied with the content and quality of the work. He also happens to be a decent bloke, reliable and easy to work with."
"I have always found Ben to be very professional. His knowledge of video applications and hardware in particular has been an asset to MacUser. And his copy is well-written and always on deadline."
Who I am...
Hello, I'm Ben Frain, a professional freelance technology writer based in Cheshire, England. I write for leading technology magazines and international publications. This page is all about what I write about, who I write for and my values as a writer.
A decade and counting
Since 2000 I have produced articles, reviews and features for leading technology magazines. I've had the pleasure of working with The Guardian newspaper, Computer Active, MacUser, Aircraft Entertainment, Macworld, Digital Video, Which and many more. I also write for business to business publications and produce white papers. View a full list of writing credits here...
I write about technology (and other things)
As a freelance technology writer I have covered topics including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Apple's consumer and professional products (iPhone, iPad, iMac, MacBooks, Mac Pro etc) and all manner of consumer and professional devices and gadgets. I've also covered in-flight entertainment/aerospace topics including IFE GUI design and content in-flight content loading and delivery. Other subjects I've covered include: GPS and mobile phone triangulation, location aware services, film making, screen-writing, video compression, HTML5, (X)HTML, CSS3, Royalty free stock footage, tournament paintball and much more.
Thorough Research
I realise that my copy will represent your publication and the quality its readers expect. My copy is thoroughly researched with products tested and re-tested to appraise them fairly and above all, accurately.
White Papers, Scripts and other copy
I also write White Papers for B2B, provide speechwriting services, website copy, content writing and screenwriting. I've also written training material for clients including Marks and Spencer.
Turnaround
Sometimes a quick turnaround is inevitable. I excel at the quick turn-around of copy. If you require quality copy at short notice, get in touch.
Ghostwriting
Got a great story to tell but not the time, inclination or knowledge of how to tell it? I work as a 'ghostwriter' providing the experience and skill to tell the story whilst you get the credit. Whether it's a autobiography, business manual or self help book I can help make the idea a reality. Get in touch to get things moving...
Punctuality
Despite over a decade as a freelance technology writer and many hundreds of articles for various publications I've never missed a deadline. I recognise that alongside quality, reliability is just as important to busy editors and sub-editors. When I'm given a deadline, that's exactly when the copy is delivered.
Ideas
Individually or as part of team, I’m always ready to supply ideas or help create new ones. Don’t take my word for it, read what magazine editor, Rob Hull had to say...
Testing, testing...
I've also worked as a software tester/evaluator. I was a member of the Adobe CS5 'Starman' Pre-release Team, having worked on the various builds of the Adobe Creative Suite CS5. I can provide detailed feedback, analysis and suggestions for your product, helping you get it right first time.
Worldwide
I can work while you sleep - I don't just work with UK based publications. I'm happy to work with all quality publications, regardless of your timezone and accent! What's more, my copy will be supplied meeting all your funny mis-spelling conventions (*cough* that's you U S of A! *cough*).
I've worked for many great publications and this page gives a (fairly) up to date list of the articles I've written.

I love writing press releases! It’s challenging and exciting to articulate something new to the world and attempting to convey everything that’s great about it. I had the pleasure of writing a couple of press releases for HDR Light Studio v3 and SprayTrace recently. Here’s the full releases for both:

Just received hard copy of a piece I’ve written for APEX magazine about the rise of Android OS for In Flight Entertainment systems. It involved talking to lots of folk in the industry and discussing the appeal (or not) of Android. It was my first time writing for APEX but it’s a great publication and [...]

I’ve just reviewed the Plantronics Voyager Pro UC v2 headset for MacUser magazine. It’s a bluetooth headset that let’s you stay connected to both your phone and your computer (e.g. Skype) at the same time. It also has a built in sensor so as soon as you put it in your ear it answers the [...]

I’ve contributed a WordPress installation step-by-step for MacUser a couple of weeks back which should appear on newsstands very shortly. Hopefully, whether you want to install via SSH, FTP, Installatron/Fanastico it’ll get WordPress up and running for you. Database setup often trips first time installers up so this is given extra attention. If the WordPress [...]

Recently contributed a tutorial on FCPX for MacUser magazine. It’s a step-by-step detailing how to get to grips with Apple’s new flagship editor. If you’re looking for a primer on some of the basics of the new NLE, you might like to check it out. The big new features are all covered including: Auditions, Magnetic [...]
